The sequel to the original 2014 Titanfall, Titanfall 2, adds a much anticipated, true single-player story mode which was needed as the biggest problem with the original game was a lack of a single-player story. Now there was an ‘amended’ story mode lacklusterly velcro’d onto the original instalment though it was really just bot multiplayer games with more dialogue. Respawn has learned from their mistake this time around and not only included a traditional single player experience, but went above and beyond. They have now served up a remarkably well done, gripping and cinematic experience which enhanced the game rather than just acting as a place holder or a vacuum to keep players mildly entertained for a few hours before delving into some more emergency ejecting, walling running, knee slidingly good times.
Respawn (wisely) didn’t mess with the multiplayer formula too much. Enough changes occurred so that you don’t feel like you’re just playing Titanfall 1 with slightly better graphics, but nothing too crazy so you aren’t left wondering what crazy new world you’ve just stepped into. For me, Titanfall 1 was shamefully underrated and was among one of the best shooters released on the Xbox One in 2014. The Titan selection was underwhelming in Titanfall 1, however this time around there is a plethora of menacing mechs to choose from and specialised load-outs play a huge role. The Scorcher, for example, volleys huge fire balls that spew flames everywhere charring any pilots in its wake, while on the other side of the spectrum, taking a more precision based angle, the Ion Titan uses beams to snipe enemies from afar and set traps. The ability to truly choose a titan that fits your play-style as apposed to having to make do with either an LMG or rockets for all titans adds a whole new dimension to the game and tons of versatility.
Most of your time on Titanfall 2 will be spent on multiplayer so I would be remiss if i didn’t tackle an issue that plagues all ‘class’ based games. Balance. The variety in combat and manoeuvrability with gadgets means that this is a fast, punishing and highly skilled competitive game. Good players are able to soar and slide around maps with a blistering pace. With a firm grasp on each maps layout, you’ll be able to disappear and reappear seemingly instantly, (a very handy and deadly trait) but newcomers need no fear as a Titan is never too far out of your reach. Following your play-style, whether it be run and gun or steal and flag securing, you can get time knocked off of your next Titanfall and have your robot friend help you with some of the heavy lifting (meaning you can rack up kills while cowering behind a disused silo quivering in your exo-suit.) Solid servers, a decent ranking system, and a strong player base all makes for a hardcore gamer’s afternoon delight, as you’ll have the want and need to keep coming back, time and time again.
